Jasmine black tea is an innovative tea that combines the thousand-year-old jasmine tea scenting process with black tea craftsmanship. It features aesthetically pleasing jasmine tea with prominent buds, a rich and lasting fresh aroma, and a refreshing taste. It's not only a highly aromatic beverage but also has a certain soothing effect, making it popular among young people. With the revival of traditional craftsmanship, increased health awareness, and strong development from manufacturers, high-quality jasmine black tea is making a comeback.

What are the jasmine varieties used in jasmine black tea? Let's take a look.

  1. Jasmine 'Hulu Tou'. This double-flowered jasmine variety is prone to mutation, usually with three leaves. Due to its poor disease resistance, it's susceptible to infection and relatively difficult to cultivate, requiring high temperature and humidity for cutting propagation. This flower is not suitable for home viewing but is commonly seen in gardens.

  2. Chrysanthemum Jasmine King. This is a larger variety of jasmine, considered a mid-range flower. It has larger flowers with more layers, and its leaves are darker and glossier than ordinary domestic jasmine. However, its cutting survival rate is lower than that of ordinary jasmine.

  3. Pearl Jasmine. Pearl jasmine can reach 1 meter in height, with slender, slightly vine-like branches and opposite leaves with prominent veins. New buds emerge from the leaf axils in early summer, with terminal or axillary cymes bearing 3-9 flowers (usually 3-4). The flowers are white and fragrant. Most varieties bloom from June to October, from early summer to late autumn, while deciduous flowers bloom in winter, from November to March of the following year. It's one of the common varieties for daily cultivation and appreciation.

  4. Yellow Jasmine. Yellow jasmine has distinctly prominent branches and deep green leaves. It blooms at 7-8 pm, with most flowers opening 1-2 layers first, and the rest opening the next day.

How is jasmine black tea made? The processing involves scenting fresh jasmine with black tea. The number of scenting times depends on the grade of the finished tea, with relatively more fragrance additions (generally no more than 9 scents). Only buds about to bloom are selected, as jasmine is a flower with a delicate fragrance that releases its aroma as it blooms. Jasmine prefers to bloom on rainy nights, so the production season for jasmine black tea is usually during summer evenings. Some lower-grade jasmine black teas may also use leftover jasmine flowers.
